Calvin Harris had some harsh words for BBC’s Newsbeat, over their portrayal of his stance on the debate of “button pushing”, that is, simply standing on stage and pressing “play” on a pre-recorded mix. BBC’s report quotes Calvin as saying the following:
“In a way, yes, you press a button but you’re still there performing your art.
“Maybe DJing is just reserved for people who use vinyl then.”
“I think it’s not a problem. In the club you want to hear a produced piece of music, you want to hear the bass, you want to hear it as good as it can sound.”
“I used to perform with a band putting all sorts of work into a live show and I can tell you that the reaction was worse than it is when I’m DJing.”
“Questions of authenticity have been raised. [Deadmau5] doesn’t fully understand, or care for, what DJing is at the core, but that doesn’t take away from his talent.”
“Crowds used to come see DJs for a musical journey. Now they expect to hear specific songs, and furthermore, they want to see a show.”
Calvin exploded later on Twitter, after the report was released, suggesting that his words were misconstrued.
“Release the audio @BBCNewsbeat and we will see exactly what was said, instead to stitching me up because u needed a bad guy in your “report”, Calvin Tweeted. “Fact is @BBCNewsbeat pre recorded my answers to a different set of questions. The guy wasn’t even wearing a fucking mic. Find the audio where i say “it’s ok to prerecord a DJ set” it doesn’t fucking exist, and i don’t know ANY DJ that actually does that.”
“F*cking raging with this Newsbeat guy. I remember the interview and his stupid fucking question is it ok for DJs to play records,” he tweeted. “Then he’ll change his question in the edit to is it ok to PRERECORD a DJ set and use my answer to a DIFFERENT QUESTION?!”, he continued. “I remember this guy from @BBCNewsbeat who did the interview, he actually apologised beforehand for not being prepared + knew nothing,” he continued. “Then he’ll make ME look bad because HE’S shite, and play it on the biggest national radio station in the UK?! Right ok @BBCNewsbeat.”
BBC responded by releasing video of the said interview.
Uhhhhhhh…. We All Hit Play?
