EP releases usually are released with little fanfare, many times because they are made up of material not strong enough for the full-length album, or are really just extended maxi-singles with alternate versions of one or two tracks. Rarely does an EP come along that truly impresses, and leaves the listener begging for more. That being said, welcome to Galantis.

Galantis is a side project made up of Christian Karlsson of indie pop act Miike Snow, and Linus Eklow aka progressive house producer, Style Of Eye. In this current drought of original, groundbreaking music in the electronic scene, these two deliver a fresh take on it with their self titled Galantis EP.

Karlsson’s background as a songwriter found him winning a grammy as the creative force behind Britney Spear’s “Toxic”, alongside producing remixes for Depeche Mode, Passion Pit, Peter Bjorn and John, Kings of Leon, and Vampire Weekend. This comes through in the sound of Galantis, which is rooted in electronic dance music, but also very much driven by lush instrumentation and live vocals. This is a far cry from the amateurish, redudant sound that is currently plaguing the scene.

Their first single and the EP’s opening cut, “Smile”, grabs the listener immediately, meshing organic, folky vocals with Style Of Eye’s full progressive sound. The same can be said for “Revolution” – which admittedly sounds a bit like Swedish House Mafia’s “Save The World” – but morphs into its own thing with repeated listens. As the EP’s lone criticism, there’s really no rehash happening here.

The song-writing and melodies are top notch, with addictive hits like the piano house driven “Help”, which has the potential to be their breakthrough single, or the equally infectious “The Heart That I’m Hearing”. The same can be said for both “You” and “Friend (Hard Times)”.

For a sub-genre that is struggling not to eat itself, Galantis’ EP is a reminder that true cohesion in electronic dance music must come from great production AND great song-writing. These two have made it look easy, while many other big names are struggling to produce another hit record. A good EP should leave you sad that its over, and screaming for more, which is accomplished here by Galantis. If their full-length debut packs this kind of consistency, this could be one of the future’s biggest new artists across the board.
